Granny Smith Apple Crumble, 21DSD
Granny Smith Apples, a New Favorite
Before we talk about this amazing Apple Crumble dessert, a word or two about Granny Smith apples. When I was a sugar eating person, Granny Smiths were low on my list of apple choices. I preferred a perfect Golden Delicious to just about any apple out there. The best Golden Delicious apples, to me, had a sweet-tart flavor that had a hint of warmth. They were perfect for eating as is, and also my first choice for baking or other cooking. I chose them by shape (round and full tops, slightly tapered bottoms) and by coloration (rich golden in color, with maybe a hint of blush). If the Golden Delicious offerings were not looking good, I chose Gala or Honeycrisp.
When I entered the world of 21 Day Sugar Detox, apples other than Granny Smith were on the “no” list. I had always found Granny Smiths to be too tart for my liking. With all sugar removed from my diet and palate, Granny Smiths started tasting great. I eat a whole apple nearly every day, a Granny Smith that now tastes candy-sweet to me. I have tried multiple 21DSD recipes using Granny Smith apples and they don’t ever disappoint.
Apple Crumble – Gluten and Sugar Free!
Using only a few ingredients, this apple crumble is delicious! The filling is just apples, cinnamon, and lemon juice. The topping is just almond meal, cinnamon, and butter. Baked all together, it makes a great dessert. The flavor combination makes me think of the sugary apple crisps I used to make. It’s not similar to an apple pie flavor, but will still take the place of apple pie in our household.
Served warm, this dessert was delightful. I bought my husband vanilla ice-cream so he could have his a-la-mode, while I poured a little heavy cream over my own serving. The next time I make it I’ll be sure to have a good sharp Cheddar on hand, so I can try that combination.
